2008 November > Official Opening of New Ajax Fire Station & Headquarters The men on the B2 Crew of the recently opened new fire hall and headquarters on the corner of Rossland & Salem Rd. love their new facility and so does the Honourable John Gerretsen, minister of the environment who was on hand to help Mayor Steve Parish, Fire Chief Randy Wilson, Council members and representatives from Fire & Emergency Services from across Durham officially open the state-of-the-art facility in late September. Besides celebrating the launch of a first-class fire facility, those in attendance celebrated the uniqueness of the building as the first municipal building in the Region and the first Fire Emergency Services Headquarters in the Province to be designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. The station and headquarters features a green roof design (the roof of the building is covered in plant matter), makes use of geothermal energy to heat the facility, boasts the first live fire training facility in the Region and is the first municipal fire headquarters registered with the Canadian Green Building Council. The net effect...a superior facility that at the double the size of the previous fire station and headquarters uses roughly half of the energy and will save 112.5 Tons of greenhouse gases each year. Congratulations to all who had a part in creating a building that sets a new standard for environmentally-friendly design in the Town, in the Region and beyond!
